While there is still uncertainty over whether players will have to be fully vaccinated for the 2022 Australian Open, Rafael Nadal has come out in support of the policy.
“I understand that there are people who do not want to be vaccinated, but it seems a bit selfish to me,” Nadal said during the launch of Marca’s first edition of Sport Weekend.

The top two players in the world, Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev, have been reluctant to commit to the Australian Open due to the vaccination policy.
“We have suffered a lot,” added Nadal.

“We do not know one hundred percent the effects of vaccines, but we do have to trust the doctors, what we do know is the effect of the virus if we are not vaccinated.
“It seems that today we (Spain) are the country that is least affected by the virus and I think it is because we have a large part of the population vaccinated.”

Nadal has been struggling with injury this summer and had announced earlier this month that he will be making his comeback at the World Tennis Championship exhibition event, which will run from December 16 to 18, in Abu Dhabi.
“The injury in my foot still needs to get a little better, but I’m already training almost an hour and a half a day so that’s positive,” the 20-time Grand Slam champion had said.

“Some days are better than others, but I’m starting to have a lot more positive days than negative ones. So I’m on the right track.”
Nadal’s last competitive match was in Washington DC on August 6 when he lost to South African Lloyd Harris.
