A fit-again Andy Murray is eager to get back to top-level tennis as, he admits, he may not have a lot of opportunities left.

Murray, 33, last played competitive tennis at the Davis Cup Finals in November in 2019. He has not played since due to injury, but was supposed to make a comeback at the Miami Masters.

The ATP tour, however, was suspended in March, with Indian Wells Masters being the first tournament to be cancelled, due to Coronavirus.

“Missing the big competitions because I’m getting old for a tennis player, you never know how many opportunities you’re going to have left to play the biggest competitions,” said Murray, in a video call hosted by Kate Middleton, the Dutchess of Cambridge, with children from London’s Bond Primary School.

“I was going out on my road bike which was something I’ve never done before, so that’s something kind of new that I learned I enjoy during lockdown,” he said.

“It’s quite important in these times to stay as active as you can because it is good for the mind as well.”

“Missing Wimbledon this week is obviously a shame. I miss the travelling. That’s one of the things that I really enjoyed doing over my career is seeing different parts of the world.

“I’ve not seen my mum and dad for a few months so I’m looking forward to seeing them again hopefully very soon.”

The three-time Grand Slam champion has not played at a major since the 2019 Australian Open.  A distraught Murray, still struggling to recover from his hip surgery last January, had believed that the 2019 Australian Open could be the last time he competed at a major.

But the Brit has undergone a hip resurfacing surgery since and announced his comeback with a title win at the European Open in Antwerp in October, 2019. Though he turned up for Great Britain at the Davis Cup Finals a pelvic injury had kept him away from the tour this year.

Murray appeared in the charity exhibition event, Battle of the Brits which was organized by his brother Jamie, last month.
